In the student center at hopkins, whenever a person walks by, men look up. Unfailingly. Women tend to flock in groups. The confident men have already preyed on them. It's only the first week, second if you count orientation. When prompted with "What's your name", I have failed to have a conversation less than 45 minutes with any of these people. I have an unfair advantage, I've done this before, and lived lonely (if you recall, I was in manahatan for 1.5yr working with people with kids and wives and mortgages and an incorrect sense that allocating any leisure time was bad).
For women, it is interesting. I have struck up conversations with a few outside the student center and on the road. I do not know if it is that they are attracted to me and therefore awkward, or whether it's me that changed. Pretty much every girl at Hopkins is asian. Maybe they have a cultural understanding that I do not know.
There's weird dynamics solely applicable to men. Most women, barring other problems, will never see loneliness. They have a stream of suitors (I do not think that this is evil. There is something correct about a man having to display a sign of strength to reach into a woman's heart).
Finding that community by being great at work, doing exercise with women and friends, being sexy, being a host, being charismatic and strategic about spending time, all these things are great now.
I'm doing a lot of these things because I cannot succeed in isolation. It would be much better to be working with a partner with the knowledge and personality that I need to feed off of. Office dynamics are so fucking great for that reason. You literally do not need to leave ever. It's just a gang of gooners. It's all just a gang of gooners all the way down. I am off to drink and get my next fix of socialization then tomorrow we will work again. goodnight.
